What's the longest period of time a patient can be on the same anti-depressant before that patient will most likely need an adjustment in his or her medication?

Often times, yes. The body adjusts to just about any med we use. You may need to have it increased or change to another entirely. It's also important to know that meds are not always THE answer. Meds in conjunction with changes in lifestyle is the best way to alleviate symptoms. Dont depend on meds entirely, make an effort to alleviate symtoms yourself. See a therapist, change diet, hobbies...But in the short term an adjustment to your meds is likely all you need. Your question though is not easy to answer..it depends on the individual. Some people can take the same anti-depressant, same dosage for many years and do fine..others not near as long.

The way I understand it is one has to eventually come to understand their own psychology why they are so depressed and understand how to become truly happy. Meds are only a temporary fix. Did you know that the suicide rate is way up since Anti-depressants have been wide spread on the market. It is a only temporary fix. One should understand how to raise their consciousness and get out of illusion, then they can actually be happy.Chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra is the quickest and easiest way to rail the consciousness and become free from misery and illusion.

You would need to talk to your doctor about this one if you have one who will give you a minute of his time that is and they resent us trying to help each other by talking about such things.anyway ask and don't take up any more then 1 minute of their time. Some doctors are very nice and will try to help you. when it comes to anti-depressants i personally believe that no one knows what works best for them but the patient themselves. They should be used within reason and with care.

Yes, they can. You're body can become immune to the same thing. They either have to up your dosage or switch you, the time varies among person. Usually about 2 months, that's just an educated guess, though.

I would assume that if they did, it wouldn't be a question of the medication, but loss of effectiveness pertaining to the active ingredient.

Not if you're following the prescription. It may be that you need to get it adjusted for strength.
