GAVISCON. It is safe. The doctor told me that it was fine to use. I used it all through pregnancy. If you are concerned though, just ask your doctor or pharmacist about it. It is awesome. It didn't have a bad taste either.

Check with your OB GYN first to see if they will approve your taking an antacids like Tums or Rolaids. But I had a heavy case of heartburn while I was pregnant, and I did take Tums. (My physician said it was okay)
The foods that you are eating may be too spicy, or have a lot of grease in them. Change the foods that you are eating, because something is irritating and bringing on the heartburn. Try to prop your pillow up behind your head while sleeping this should bring some type of relief. Eat meals in smaller amounts...Your uterus is growing and may be pressing against your stomach to make room for the baby. So larger amounts of food can bring on a case of indigestion. Don't lay down too soon after eating, try to let your food digest.
Something else that worked for me was something as simple as Licorice candy. I got the idea out a women's magazine as a home remedy, and it actually worked for me. I also enjoy eating licorice and it brought instant relief.
Hang in there...I know how you feel...They say that babies that give you heartburn often have a lot of hair. All my girls were born with beautiful curly locks.

Tums are safe, but I'm guessing that if you have heartburn bad enough to write in about, Tums won't help you much.
You can also try Mylanta. You can keep it in the refrigerator, and the cold helps with the pain, too. But, again, it's probably not strong enough.
I also found that altering my diet didn't help at all.
You should ask your doctor, but my OB said that Zantac--even the extra strength dose--was fine.
And, in the end, my OB prescribed me Prevacid, which was a total lifesaver. Once I started on that, I never had a problem with heartburn again. Stopped taking it on the day I delivered. It was a miracle drug!

Tums is the best plus the baby gets the extra calcium, it does help not to eat about 3 hours before bed.
