I wonder if you mean "margin"?

It is the slice of the paper at the left side (in roman a b c writing) where there is no lettering. A blank side.

Most pages of script have 4 margins - one on each side, one at the top and one at the bottom.. The printer of a book will ask : "How big do you want your margins to be?"
