look up crop rotation, see when that practice started. also look up to see when certain machines to help with farming were designed, the cotton gin, combine, tractor, etc. Hope this gives you a start.

As technology in the US rose along with a steady rise in poulation, immigration, and city population farm production increased. This was due to expansion of the west and increased technology. This rise in production led to a steap decline n prices which in turn negatively affect the American Farmer. This helped to cause the Populist, Granger and Progresive movements in America.

I'm not really sure... but that sounds about the time when manufactoring was hot, more ppl lived in the cities so agriculture had to "mass produce" to beable to accomodate for all those people who no longer had there own farms or ranches- but still had to be fed.
