I came across this interesting fact the other day and confirmed it today. Basically the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year because when compared to the day before and the day after, the sun rises later than the sun sets earlier.

Beginning a few days ago and through December 15th are when the shortest sunlit afternoons occur.

So if you already knew this, please state how you came across the information.

I learned last year in science that the shortest day of the year is the winter solstice and the longest is the summer solstice.

I learned it from astronomy charts and I think you'll find the latest sunrise is actually in January.
