It depends entirely on what sub field you enter. If you're talking Industrial/Organizational Psych or Human Factors Psych, then you can make some seriously big money. Avg is pushing 6 figures. As for counseling psychs, they don't make pure profit. OK, so one makes 350/hr. How many hours of treatment are provided/week? How many employees are being paid? What are Insurance costs? Professional dues to maintain licensure? etc. Those things add up fast and cut into net salary. And a lot of insurance companies are no longer paying for a PhD psych, so that is not the best place to go to make money these days.
Health psychs probably don't make much. School psychs make good money - over 40k, plus govt benefits, summers off, etc.
Clinical psychs can make good money, Research psychs probably not so much.
There's a book called Careers in Psychology. It describes the many types of jobs and the expected salaries. Check it out.

Depends on level of education, licensure, state you are in, sub-field, and population being served.
BA/BS isn't going to earn much. No licensure available. Community mental health and D&A services are most popular.
MA level has licensure available. Money sucks unless you're in a private practice, but quite honestly, it seems it's usually the PhD/PsyD's who manage to go that far. They also have licensure status.
State employees, which usually requires an MA for psych with licensure (at least in my state, and several surrounding, those are the requirements), tend to do well. But if you don't have your license, you're pretty much going to do social work. And believe me, the 2 are not the same thing. The training is different.

A lot. Great psychologists get paid around $350 an hour, even if the whole time is just spent listening to the patient. If you work 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, you make about $10,000 a week. If you worked every week except for during the summer, you'd make around $400,000 a year.
In other words, it's an amazing career choice.
