Can this be accomplished by flipping the tow switch under the hood? or will the damage the vehicle?

The tow switch is only for towing. The 4-matic system is full time only.

If your MBz has a switch called (TOW), you should be able to tow the car for short distances by disabling the front two wheels. Selecting TOW mode should disable the front wheels safely for about 20 miles.
All wheel drive with MBz beginning in the year ~2000 is just that. No switch to disable the two front wheels.
The problem comes when the two differentials need to increase or decrease the rear wheel speeds to negotiate going around a fairly tight turn. Apparently, the two differentials are tied together so that the front wheels need to rotate at the same speed as the rear wheels. If the hand brake is set, you can see that something is going to get stressed and over heated in a very short span of time. Some references may demand that you disconnect the F>R driveshaft or use a flatbed truck to move the car. Check carefully what is happening before you go very far.

most all wheel drive systems are not made to be driven only by two wheel it will put too much stain on the differential that is being used. i have a subaru svx with a fuse to put in 2wd but is to be used only a short distance only.

If you have a car with 4matic no. If you have a G-wagon yes. 4matic is an all wheel drive system and does not have a differential that you can switch on and off. In the G-wagon you can.

4 matic is all time. there is no way you can disengage the front wheels from power, unless you rip off the drivetrain, which is not a smart thing to do at all.
