When I moved into small 1 story ranch house there were those typical cheap bushes all along the front, they seem to hide the house and since it is so small and there is some fancy brickwork on the front should I rip them out for something different?

If you don't like the way they look, then yes - get rid of them! It sounds as if your house has some attractive features that you want to display, not hide, so it seems like a good idea to choose plantings that enhance the beauty of the house rather than cover it up.

If you choose to go with a different planting, do some research first so you select plants that will thrive in your setting (climate, soil type, sun exposure) as well as giving consideration to the plant height and texture.

YOUR YARD, AFTER THE FREEZE DEPENDING ON WHAT TYPE THEY ARE, CUT THEM LOW AND THEN MAINTAIN THEM BY HEDGE TRIMMING ONCE A MONTH. CHECK WITH GARDEN CENTER TO SEE IF YOUR BUSHES ARE THAT TYPE. YOU COULD USE ORTHO BRUSH B GON
