In colonial times, they used pences and shillings and pounds... how many pences are in a shilling??

TODAY a shilling is the same as five pence and there are 100 pence, or 20 shillings in a pound.

BUT, in COLONIAL TIMES a shilling was actually worth 12 pence! Back in those days there were 240 pence in a pound. So if you do the math, there were still 20 shillings in a pound back then.

Imagine trying to add money if there were 240 cents in a dollar. Ick! That was the problem we British had, so in 1971 we finally changed it so that it was 100 pence to the pound.
