This is so exciting! I love picking out pieces to fit moods.
Here's what I have to suggest:
The Barber Violin Concerto: 2nd movement (it's heart-wrenching)
The Bruch Violin Concerto 2nd movement (it's almost an unsaid rule that 2nd movements are slower and...sadder, so look for 2nd movements)
The Bruch Scottish Fantasy - 2nd movement, and 3rd movement
Borodin Symphony No. 2, 3rd movement
Theme from Schindler's List
Wieniawski Violin Concerto No.1 Op14 - 2nd movement
Vitali Chaconne
I hope one of these works!

Here are a few that come to mind:

"Adagio for Strings" - Samuel Barber (one of my personal favorites)

"The Unanswered Question" - Charles Ives

"Moonlight Sonata" - Beethoven

Hope this helps!

its a bit cliche but check out Adagio (for strings) by Samuel Barber. (It was used in the movie Platoon).
