What substance can I use to stiffen thread?
...I need to get regular sewing thread to be stiff enough to hold the shape I give it and support just a little weight (no more than a couple needle's worth of weight, at most). However, I need the thread to look as if nothing is on it or supporting it. Is there a kind of glue that might work?
What substance would be best to accomplish this?

The thread should be fairly hard when it is dry.

You can try sugar starch.....dissolve one part sugar into two parts water and soak the thread it it. When the thread dries it will remain in the shape you gave it.

bees wax will stiffen the thread till you get it arranged to your design, then you can use Aleenes Jewel it glue. It is thin, comes out bluish but dries clear and doesn't change color when exposed to sunlight and won't go limp in humidity because it is washable. Elmer's glue will wash out or go limp or sticky if exposed to humidity/water.

You could try clear nail polish. When I was in ballet as a little girl, my mom would put nail polish on my hose to keep runs from getting worse. The hose would get stiff.

You can dilute white elmers glue and dip in that. It will take a little while to dry. Or try spray starch.

Any kind of glue will work-they all dry clear. Put a little white glue in water if you don't want it to be too gloppy.

There is something that quilters use, I believe it is bee's wax. You run your thread through it. Check with your local sewing/craft shop.
