Because the perfume companies paid them a lot of money. And not many last more than a year or two. I think in some cases they use the same scent a couple years later with a new name (that years' flavor of the month) and new bottle design.

I know what you mean, though! I just saw a commercial for Antonio Banderas' new cologne...available now...AT WALGREENS! Is that what he has been reduced to! If I were him, I'd be so pissed! I wonder if he knew he was going to be sold in Walgreens? I bet not b/c there's no way any celebrity would want that!
The Chanel No. 5 commercial is really good.

Money....a lot of money comes with the publicity made by their names, as well as the profitable market of cosmetics and fragances...they make alot of money.... only by using their name properly it is pretty much money and pulicity asured with not a lot of work.
