You can, but you'd be much better off connecting the two computers by their Ethernet ports. Most modern operating systems support this kind of network quite well.
Edit: It used to be said that you needed an Ethernet crossover cable to do this, but that's no longer the case. Any Ethernet cable will do, as most modern computers can detect which type of cable is being used and act accordingly.

Yes, but it would be a lot more effective to use a cross-over cable to connect the two but only if both computer's have network cards!

ok , are you talking about a 56k modem ?? or cable modem . If its a 56k modem then no , if its via a cable-modem , well then it depends on the equipment it self , some of them have from 4 to 5 ports other DONT have

no, not really. your modem will try to find a dial tone and its not going to find it and throw an error, just get two cheaps network cards from radio shack or walmart and use a cross over cable.
