My rx7 is a 91. It needs a good amount of body work, window switch, paint (already have), rear wheel bearings. The output shaft leaks, even after being replaced. That tells me that the driveshaft is worn from the seal, and needs replacement also. 2nd gear synchronizers are going. Increasing the horsepower further from the RX7 is going to mean adding a turbo, not cost effective.

The 300ZX is a 87. It probably has its own list of hidden problems that wont surface untill its put on a lift/ driven a thousand miles. The body work is being done right now (rear fender wells, trunk) by the current owner. Engine is "replaced with one with 45k miles (long block)". No leaks other than from where the fenders were missing. Documented maintainance, new brakes etc. I still need to test drive & jack it up to check bearings/ball joints.

My budget is $1500, the cost of the 300ZX. I'll try to go down to $1300 because I'll still have to do body work to make it perfect.
What do you think, 7 or 300ZX

Even tho I own and adore my 300ZX, i wouldnt suggest the Z31 (1987 300Z). Hunt around for a Z32 1989-on, u may get a project car for around that money. The Z31 is a poor handling, and rather ugly, dog. Besides, a Z32 twinturbo auto or manual kicks some serious *** AND will get you laid better! Head for the auctions, ebay, etc, and keep your fingers crossed!

i would get the 300ZX. they are nice cars and easier to work on than the RX7's you can also make the 300ZX considerably fast with very little work. I would know i'm currently building a 86 300ZX Turbo.

turbos run off exhaust gases, check out the exhaust manifolds and follow along and you will see the turbo. If its a turbo you cant miss it, also if you drive the car you have a waste gate/ turbo gauge on dash that indicates the level of boost. also you will hear the turbo when driving and it ingages.
