Wet grinders are very popular tools in the South Indian kitchen used to make paste out of soaked grains and lentils. At one time, a wet grinder consisted of a large rock with a hole in it, where a cylindrical rock with a wooden handle fit in. The grain and lentil mixture was poured in with water and the cylinder rotated by the handle on the top to grind the food together. The ground paste is used for various food items like idli, dosa, and vada.
The invention of electricity has led to the development of electric-powered wet grinders. These electric models were first introduced in restaurants and later moved into the home. Popular brands include:
Ultra Wet Grinder
Santha Tilting Wet grinders
Sowbaghya Wet Grinder
Premier Grinder
SPL wet grinders
Most modern models still have stone components for the grinding action. The stone is usually granite stone. The old manual grinding stones used to be refinished for better results. Modern stones usually don't need refinishing and they last much longer.
Briefly, in the 1970s, there were wet grinding services offered as well.

It appears that the wet grinders are the inventions of certain entrepreneurs in Coimbatore, in Tamilnadu. As the news item in the Hindu would reveal, it is even being patented. http://www.hindu.com/2006/03/28/stories/2006032801840200.htm.No individual appears to be credited with its invention.

In 1938, Wet grinder is said to be invented by Mr. Daniels pillai a Saiva pillai hailed from Tanjore who was the only learned engineer in south India who did his training in Britain and was transferred to India & got married in Tanjore later settled in Madurai. Started his own business as engineer and did several govt projects 4 govt ruled by britainers, later made his own grinder machine which was copied by his friend's son from Coimbatore who was getting trained to be an engineer in Daniels pillai's company. Later the Coimbatore guy improvised and started his own business in manufacturing of wet grinders after independence. This is true, as the sources I heard from are reliable educated elders. And still there photos of Mr. Daniels pillai in certain old places in Madurai. In fact as per the hearing Mr. Daniels pillai's major projects wher for britainers, so after 10yrs since britainers left India Daniels Pillai's business started to diminish.
