Hello:
A unit of alcohol is either one ounce of liquor, one 6 ounce glass of wine or one beer.
There is no real concensus on a recommended alcohol limit per week.
However, 1-2 units of alcohol per day is not really considered overindulgence. In fact, 1-2 glasses of red wine (not white) per day has been shown to reduce your risks of cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke). It can also lower your cholesterol level and blood pressure.
In my practice, when a patient tells me they drink red wine daily, I dont tell them to stop but I also dont tell a patient who doesnt drink at all to start either.
The problem with a recommendation is you have to take into consideration many factors: age, sex, weight, history of alcoholism in the patient or family members, health of the patient, ie. any high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, cholesterol problems just to name a few.
If you are worried that you may have a problem there is a very simple questionairre called the "CAGE" questionnaire.
1. C=Have you ever thought that you may need to "c"ut down on your alcohol intake?
2. A=Have you ever gotten "a"nnoyed by others when they criticized your alcohol intake?
3. G=Have you ever had feelings of "g"uilt about your drinking or from something you did while you were drinking?
4. E=Have you ever considered or had an "e"ye opener (a drink the next day after drinking the night before) to make yourself feel better?
If you answered 2 or more of these questions then there is a high likelihood that there may be a problem with your alcohol consumption habits.
I see and treat a lot of patients with alcohol problems, not only alcohol use, abuse, dependence, binge drinking, maintenance alcoholics and binge alcoholics (ie. the weekend drinker).
I hope this helped answer your questions and I apologize for not being able to give you a more definitive answer about "limits" but there just isn't any global agreement on this subject in the medical community.
Regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.
