Tides are caused primarily caused by the moon but are alterted by other solar system bodies. The most known names for tides are the high and low tides. A tide is considered a flooding tide before it becomes high and an ebbing tide before it becomes low. There are also different strengths of tides throughout the year. These are called spring tides( when the moon is in line with the sun thus strengthing the gravitational force causing more drastic changes in the tides) and neap tides ( when the moon is not in line with the sun causing weaker tides due to less gravitational force). Hope this helps

The gravitational pull of the moon and sun creates a bulge in the seas, which the earth rotates through. The height of the bulge depends on the alignment of the moon and sun.

At new and full moons (actually just after) they are in alignment, so the bulge is higher. This gives us SPRING tides. These have the biggest tidal range - highest highs and lowest lows.

At half moons, they are at 90 degrees to each other, so we get NEAP tides, which have lower ranges.
