The prevalence of intersexuality is estimated at 1 in 2,000 births. Additionally, it is estimated that there are nearly 65,000 intersex births worldwide per year.

They can certainly lead a normal life. Most of the time, nobody even knows about it. There are so many different types of intersexuality- some 'women' have spent their whole lives as women only to go to the doctor one day in their mid-thirties complaining of stomach pains that turn out to be undescended testicles. There are hormone deficiencies, isensitivities to androgens that result in beautiful supermodel-like women, and so on. It just depends. The only real difficulties an intersex person faces are 1), whether they are allowed to be as they are, or recieve non-consenting surgeries and hormones as a child to 'make them one or the other', 2) his/her/hir own feelings of shame/guilt and self-identity, 3) the judgement of society should they know of the intersex status, and 4) finding lovers and relationships. However, most intersex people happily find relationships with people for whom the intersexuality is not a problem, or is even an added plus! Soem intersexed individuals have very hard lives; others have it very easy due to information, support, and so on.

Hope that helps!

I saw a documentary on the subject. It seems that children are born with this condition far more often than you might think. Very often in the old days doctors would push parents to decide the sex of the child right out of the gate. This was often a mistake. I think they should let well enough alone until the child starts to show signs in one direction or the other. To answer your question. . . yes they can. . . at least as "normal" a life as any of us.
Ciao!

'intersex' is the latest term for 'hermaphrodite'. those who are truly a hermaphrodite like the term 'intersex' better. anyway, there's one in my town, and she seems to be leading as normal a life as is possible. there are difficulties at times, to be sure.

here's a link about a person who went thru these difficulties of adjusting, as the years went by. you'll be able to see from pictures thru the years how difficult it seemed to be. seemed to be in a 'sexual legal limbo' for a time, but has come to terms with life now, seems to be happy.

Anyone can make the best out of life if he/she tries. There are stars that even undergo sex change.
