Let's skip the grades and other things that are personal and should not be shared with the class! Height and/or weight or how many are in a family can be an embarrassment to any age group, so skip that, too, unless you want some kid crying about feeling fat or mommy not living with them anymore. Sometimes the youngest or oldest kids are embarrassed by those facts, too.

Something like eye color can teach a little biology (how many browns?), or try left-hand/right-handers (math = percentages), number of letters or syllables in their last name (language), or get on the internet and find out the nationality of their last names and have them sit in approximation to the country on the world map (hey, a culture and geography lesson!). Whatever you come up with, have it teach them something rather than just be a game, and the embarrassments won't be there.

Now, if you're trying to simply manage the classroom, there's no set rule. You can't always put "the troublemaker" in the middle and the "goofball" up front - learn what makes each kid tick (and what makes each one get ticked!) and place them where every child has a good seat. Promise that where they sit will change so if it doesn't work, you can change it without complaint.

And if you have to change one kid's place because of behavior, change several so it isn't obvious or look like you're picking on the one kid.

depends, if you want them in a specific way to learn, or for what....

I am a student, and I can imagine the best formation for a class would be in rows, with the least focused up front, the class clown on the back, and the active / participative students in the center, I find that when the classes I take are this way, the class tends to go better (more productive) and faster, because least focuse students do focus more up front, active students encourage the rest of the class by being on the center ( almost allways class' focus point) and the class clowns on the back will not have the attention they tend to have up front to do the distractions they do.

Like in groups? Okay, you mentioned birthdays and age. Or do you mean classroom set up (2 per table, rows, semi-circle)?
