I thought this was illegal, but I'm not sure. I thought I heard that you could buy any kind of "good" and not be denied but that companies can deny you a "service" they provide.

A business is not a government agency - they generally don't HAVE to do business with any particular person. There are a few areas where that is not so, for example, if you run a hotel, you can't refuse a person a night's stay based on their skin color. But beyond that kind of thing, they don't have to sell you anything, just as you don't have to buy anything from them.

Mudball:

A company has the right to refuse service or goods to anyone. If you have felony record, your screwed on a lot of things, dealing with weapons. If your credit history is not good, they will flat out tell you"Sorry" Also consider the merchant stand point of view. They are responsible for a lot of items they sell. If you have passed a bad check to them in the past, your done! Many retailers and wholesalers are very picky when dealing with certain individuals. Most dealers are fair, but if pushed they can get nasty at times. If you have been proven a "deadbeat customer" in the past, forget it. There are many factors involved here. Your not always refused service or goods, but many times the "Old Cliche" is - Money talks-B--- S--- walks is true even to todays standereds. Trust between a customer and retailer/wholesaler/dealer is very important. Due to the way things are today, they take a closer and longer look at their potential customers by scrutiny and written paper. Once a ":Hand Shake " was the best thing next to your name-today that is long gone....

You have to check the laws of your state. Some states consider "goods" and "services" as one in the same. Since retailers reserve the right to refuse service they can thereby refuse to sell goods. However, there are rules governing the refusal of service/goods and these rules are mandated by each individual state and the federal government. As long as the merchant/organization did not violate state/federal law or violate your civil rights by refusing to sell you something or provide you with a service, it was perfectly legal and well within their scope to do so.

There are specific cases when they can do so. For example, if you have a bad credit history with them (owe them money) they can refuse to sell you something. Wouldn't you do it as well?

If you have a history of giving an inappropriate use to their products. For example, they sell this very exclusive and expensive cream, you buy a big bunch of them and as a promotion to a good without the same quality you decide to sell it offering the cream as a gift. Another example: company X sells this very expensive cream which as part of its trade image can only be sold in very expensive stores. They may refuse to sell it to you if you are going to market it through your not very exclusive stores.

Also, if for example they agree with you that you will exibit the product in a certain way and you fail to do so (in harm of the product or producer's image), they can refuse to sell it to you again.

Etc.

A business can refuse to serve you because you have a big nose if they want. They don't have to give a reason.

You need to check the laws in your state. In some states, the retailer doesn't have to allow you on his property, therefore, he can't sell you anything. Laws like this, very from state to state.
