Most U.S. citizens think that we have a choice whether to help the U.K. (or not) if Russia were to nuke them, the fact of the matter is we don't really have a choice.
Though economic/trade relations and a strong shared alliance forged in the battles of WWII are good reasons why the US would side with the U.K and help out. Many in the U.S. think (as a "superpower") we are not obligated to help, they're wrong.
As a member of NATO the U.S. (along with all other members) are bound by the stipulations within the treaty to commit resources and military forces to aid any member nation that comes under attack by a non-member nation. If the U.S. were to ever refuse, and fail in it's obligations, NATO would dissovle and the diplomatic backlash against the U.S. would be 5 times worse than what's been going on with the Iraq War and the U.S.'s behaviour in how it has been conducting the "War on Terror".
With the "Fall of Communism" in the early 90s and the dissolution of the "Warsaw Nations" into their seperate countries, now focused on establishing their own forms of culture, govenrment, and individuality. The "Red Threat" to the "Free Western World" was becoming less of a concern and (I think) NATO should have been disbanded in the late 90s.
I think the reason the U.N. seems so ineffective is because during the cold war most of the member nations were heavily infleuenced by the one of the two superpowers, and became like "unofficial" members of NATO (or Warsaw) and today it is undermined by the U.S.'s reliance on the NATO treaty.
Unfortunately, the current administration has ZERO diplomatic skills and NATO's continued existence has provided them with a safety net of "spare" military forces for the War on Terror, so they have no insentive to develop some diplomatic skills. If NATO had disbanded by 2000 the War on Terror would have unfolded differently and would be fought right.
The majority of the world would still have rallied behind the U.S. after 9-11 and would had gone into Afganistan with plenty of help to take out the Taliban. It was the presence of NATO forces in Afganistan that allowed the Neo-Cons to think they could redirect the majority of U.S. forces to invade Iraq. If NATO no longer existed the U.S. would have had to kept its forces in Afganistan and lead by example to maintain the alliances. Remaining in Afganistan would have given the U.S. and its allies a better chance to completely destroy Al Qaeda in Afganistan, cripple its ability to train and generate propaganda, and find/kill Osama Bin Ladden. The U.S. would have avoided the mess in Iraq and the resulting diplomatic backlash.

Of course the US would help. I am sorry this is actually up for debate. In my mind there is no question. When I saw the World Trade center burning, there was no doubt in my mind we were going to war and soon. The only question was with who and when. There is no way in the world the US would stand by and watch Russia or any other country bomb the UK. If that happened, America would be ready to come to your aid.

Don't you mean the USSR. which no longer exist.
Russia is a lovely little country without the need or wish to nuke anybody.
Anyway, the Muslims bombed America and they were powerless to do anything back, what makes anyone think that they could help us.
I'd preferr it if the Yanks kept out of our wars in the future, look how many uf us they killed in the Gulf War.

Yes, and I firmly believe we would help the U.K.
The U.S. and U.K. have an overall good relationship. Plus, there's tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers stationed in the U.K. Then, there's the economies and trade...
It's all about interests, really.
Russia would be pretty stupid to mess with the U.K., seeing as all three countries have nukes. I haven't been following too closely on certain issues in Europe these days, but if Russia ever wants to be a part of the EU, bombing the U.K. would hurt their chances.

How typical to hear the phrase "we saved you once, and would help again" As if that isn't bad enough, when oh when are you people going to stop referring to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as England!? In case you didn't know, Britain is made up of four countries...Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England. Getting this wrong would be like us British referring to the USA as Canada!!!

We can defend ourselves, we have submarines out there. So we dont have to rely on anyone else to defend us.
However we have good relations with the US and Europe and Russia so if we were anihallated questions would be asked and wars declared.
I dont think its something to worry about, any power destroying another totally would have a lot to answer for.

If Russia did bomb us (if you mean with nukes) then I personally wouldn't be too bothered as I'd be toast- but I'd like to think the Yanks would as they've been itching to for some time now and not just Russia.

No way. Not unless there was a vested interest for the US. However I think it highly unlikely the Russians would bomb the UK.

The USA eventually came to the aid of UK and liberated the rest of Europe in WW II.
It is true the USA did drag it's feet in doing so till the attack on Perl Harbour.
So you might be right about that part in your question.

On the basis of their late entries into WW1 & WW2, they are unlikely to intervene quickly enough. So if it turns out that the Russian governement are behind this poisoning recently, will we have take them on, at least initially, by ourselves. All I can say is that Vladimir is a girls name so bring it on Putin you Ruski rube.
