If you have a dwarf hamster you may be out of luck. They are difficult to tame for any length of time because they have very short memories.

Full sized hamsters and teddy bear hamsters just need consistent, gentle handling. We had one last year that had run wild for 6 months in a friends basement and was WILD when we got it. He was soooo fast and good at getting away that we named him Lightening. He calmed down in a few days and after a few weeks became very affectionate.

My husband and i have 2 russian hamsters. I always open the cage door and stick my hand open palmed right underneath the door. I never stick my hand in the cage because Hamsters can be territorial and feel threatened. Once i stick my hand underneath the door, he usually sniff around the open door and then slowly walks into my hand. It may help if you put seeds or his favorite snack in the palm of your hand.
Build a relationship with your hamster by holding him at least every day and rubbing him gently and feeding him treats.
If he bites on his cage make sure you give him chew sticks to chew on.

Some hamsters are like that, they either like you to pick him up right after you bring them home and then you have the one's that aren't too happy. Put your fist againt the cage so he can smell you and he can't really bite, because there's no finger, Keep on doing that and then start putting sunflower seed between your fingers so he can pick them off. After a while you should be able to touch him.

After growing up with plenty hamsters i've learned that you need to hold them and such on a regular basis so they become familiar with you. When you neglect them they become used to not bein handled and therefore nip and are jumpy. When they are asleep and you want to wake them make sure you tap on the woodchips around them but do not touch them until they pick their head up. This is less stressfull for them and doesnt scare them as apposed to you reaching and poking at them while sleeping.

Typicaly hamsters will bite the owner once usualy shortly after first owning. I dotn remember why they do this. But what I did when I had a somewhat untame hamster I would put thick enough gloves on my hand (possibly rub them in your hands prior to putting them on so your scent is on them) and just start picking it up regularly. They should eventually become used to you handling them.

Otherwise its just a tempermental hamster. Alot of times females are more aggressive than males. I owned one females and males and preferr males.

Hamsters aren't as domesticated as dogs and cats so it might not be possible. Feeding and talking might help after time it will warm up to you but there nippers so watch out
