Both are made by Fender. There are varying headstock, pickguard, electronics, and pickup configurations. The one universal thing about each is their body shape. A telecaster is has a single cutaway on the body below the neck. A stratocaster has a double cutaway on the body, both above and below the neck.

If you're a guitar player and wanting to know some of the subtler differences, teles tend to be a little more bright and twangy in sound. Many have "lipstick tube" pickups in which the coils are contained in a metal rather than plastic housing. This helps create a little bit brighter tone. Strats usually have three pickups and have a little more versatile tone. They've got a little bit chunkier tone than a telecaster but less so than say a Gibson Les Paul.

Both are pretty versatile but tend to be better for lead guitar than for rhythm guitar in my opinion.

I always thought that the Telecaster was more of a country music guitar and the Strat was more of a rock guitar. But that's only because there's not a lot of rock players who use the Telecaster. Bruce Springsteen and Keith Richards use Telecasters regularly, but off hand I can't think of very many more.

a telecaster is older and only has one pickup. a stratocaster was made more recently and has more than one pickup, usually about three. there might be other differences but thats all i can think of right now.

The diffrences are the shape of the body and the headstock. Do a yahoo image search for both and you will see the obvious diffrences.
