In my opinion, the employee shouldn't be in a position to interact with the public if his illness is causing potential harm to children. He could work in back in the stockroom, but not out on the floor where he can frighten others. The store manager is going to be doing good if he and the store don't get sued over incidents like these.
Maybe you could talk to the manager and tell him that you think it's great that he's willing to hire people with problems, but that perhaps they should be in a non-public environment. Tell him that you understand that the man isn't in full control of his actions and that he needs a little more supervision than he can receive when he's out stocking in public places.
If the manager doesn't respond or responds poorly, then you can always contact the store owner and let him know how you feel. Let him know that others have had the same problem, and whereas you don't want to see the man fired, he does need more supervision.
That's how I'd handle it.

I appreciate business owners who give jobs to mentally and physically handicapped people. But the business owner is wholly responsible for the actions of those employees, and the welfare of the shoppers in his business. I don't like to threaten lawsuits, either, but the manager owes you more than an apology. Do you want money to get you over this? After all, what will help your child most? He wasn't injured permanently, and the less fuss made now will allow him to forget this sooner. Tell the manager you'll settle for him giving you the full basket of food or whatever you had, and then don't go back to that store again.

Wow. I can not believe all the store did was send the employee home. I think he should be fired! If the manager didn't do so I would ask to speak to corporate. I understand mental disability very much however those are not the types of individuals that should be on the floor assisting customers. I am sorry that happened, though.

I would complain to the highest level of the corporation which owns the store to ensure that this indvidual has no further contact with the public. This means calling the office of the CEO! Demand a written apology from the store. If you post the name of the store, I'll find the principals for you.
I would tell your son that the man is sick and that you will make sure that the man never talks to him again.
Good luck.

First: write down and remember everything you can about the situation, where it was what time etc
Talk to the manager, and then if the manager is uncooperative talk to the district manager. If the man is there under a work program, speak to that director as well.

well first of all I would have probabley done what you did and told the manager. I'm sure if the manager is smart they would either talk to him about his behavior or I bet he got fired I think you made the right decition.

SEEMS THE STORE MANAGER ALREADY ADDRESSED IT. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY EXPLAIN TO YOUR SON THOUGH THAT THE MAN WAS SICK AND HE(YOUR SON WAS IN NO WAY AT FAULT. IF YOU WISH TO SHOP THERE AGAIN AND THE SAME MAN IS THERE I WOULD JUST SMILE AND WAVE. YOU WILL SHOW YOUR SON THAT ILLNESS IS ILLNESS AND THE MAN CAN BE FORGIVEN.
