What Happened To Musical Youth

When they hit the No.1 spot in September 1982, they had thousands of teenagers all over the country singing the words to their catchy single Pass The Dutchie.

All of a sudden Michael Grant, his brother Kelvin, brothers Patrick and Junior Waite and lead singer Dennis Seaton were the most recognised, talked about and celebrated young people in the country.

A heady feat for a band whose members were all still at school.

Pass The Dutchie, a reworked version of Pass The Koutchie by reggae legends The Mighty Diamonds also brought the youngsters international fame and a Grammy nomination.

The record was a top 10 hit in the US and led to them working with music giants such as Lionel Ritchie and Donna Summer.

Further hits followed: Youth of Today, Never Gonna Give You Up, I’m Sixteen and Whatcha Talkin’ Bout’ – the last penned by Stevie Wonder.

But in true pop star fashion it all went wrong.

Lol!!!! Musical Youth, that takes me back a few years! I think they "passed the Dutchie" one too many times! Probably made enough money from that one hit alone back in the 80s to last them forever. I think they were all brothers.

By 2005, now reduced to just a duo of Michael Grant and Dennis Seaton, Musical Youth performed at Wiesen festival in Austria.
