its the difference between something...like if i was to write an essay on two characters from a story...most likely it would be a compare and contrast meaning i would show things they have a like(comparing) and things that are different(contrasting)

There are a few different meanings
The most common being to show the difference between two items.
Or the differnce between light and dark in a photo

It means to tell how something is different. When you compare, you tell how something is the same.

e.g. Contrast Alaska from Hawaii. . .one is cold, the other is hot.

e.g. Compare Alaska to Hawaii. . .both are fairly new states.
