Why do you think only ladies can answer this question? That is very sexist of you. Shame.

Ovulation takes place about 12-16 days before your period. Ovulation happens over a course of several hours but you can get pregnant 2-3 days within ovulation as it takes that long for the egg to travel down the fallopian tube, where fertilization takes place. Within your cycle, there is first the follicullar pahse where FSH (follicular stimulating hormone) is released, then the release of estrogen, then lutenizing hormone which leads to ovulation. This is followed by progesterone. The luteal phase where the progesterone is released lasts anywhere between 12-16 days. If you're pregnant, it will last longer and will be accompanied byHCG to support the lining. If you're not, then the endometrial lining will break down and result in menstruation.

I am going to make the assumption that you have a typical 28 day cycle. Ovulation occurs around day 14. This is not set in stone and it has been found to occur on any day in the cycle, but this is most common. Once the egg is released from the ovary, conception can occur as the egg travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus. This usually takes around 5 days. Roughly another week after that (Days 21-28) you would shed you endometrial lining (have your period) if a fertilized egg has not implanted in the uterine lining.

When you get your period that is called day one. On about day 14 the average woman will ovulate. Then on average after day 28 you'll get your next period. You're most fertile around days 10-17. If you're not on the pill you'll usually find you have a higher desire to have sex on days12-13, because of your hormones. A 28 day cycle is only an average, there is a lot of variation, but basically ovulation is halfway between the first day of your last period and the first day of your next period.

Yes, it is before. Normally just a few days before.
I believe Ovulation only lasts a day, maybe two. To see exactly when you are ovulating, take your temperature each morning at the same time. When it peaks, you are ovulating.
