Where to begin? My family has so many traditions. I guess I'll just name a few favorites and ones that don't cost much.
First, we always go driving to look at Christmas lights. We always put up the Christmas tree at midnight after Thanksgiving. Of course, shopping the day after Thanksgiving. Decorating the windows with fake snow and stencils is always fun. Watching a Christmas movie every night during December is a must. Oh yeah! While opening presents, none of that putting away all of the paper and bows in a neat trash bag as you go. Oh no... Everyone throws the paper and ribbons about until the very last gift is opened. I have a photo every year of the huge mess around the tree after all of the gifts have been opened.
There is an article about this exact topic at http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/79091/start_your_own_family_holiday_traditions.html

Well my family is small and nothing had changed for 20 years until this year. But before this year this is what we did....
Christmas Eve Candlelit Service at church. Then we go back to the house and read the Christmas story in the Bible (me and my brother used to fight over who reads it). Then we make some one "Santa" to give out the presents. Then we go to bed really really late and get up really really early. I hope this Christmas will be just as good now that I'm married and live 6 hours from my parents.

Having stockings for whoever is here at Christmas. It's family tradition that whoever is here for Christmas wakes up to a Christmas stocking. It may just be some cutesy piddly items but everyone has a stocking.
Oh and tacos on Christmas eve. It just wouldn't be Christmas without them.

We have a few:
- burning a bayberry candle on Christmas Eve. It is supposed to bring prosperity and good luck during the holidays and in the coming New Year. It also smells lovely, and reminds me of home.
- contributing to charity in some way. Recent favorites are buying gift in honor of a loved one through Heifer International (look at their website!) or buying books for children in need through the Salvation Army holiday gift drive.
- buying our pet(s) a small gift
- putting on a big pot of tea to enjoy while we unwrap our gifts. (It goes well with the chocolates we exchange, too!)

My new hubby & I are starting a new tradition this year, actually he has done this for years but now I'm getting involved. We are going to take hot coffee and or soup as well as sandwiches downtown to the homeless people that are in our downtown core daily.
