This is French and it means--on the contrary. I disagree, you have it wrong. You have it backwards.
It is usually used in in a situation when you disagree, but you want to express your disagreement in a light hearted, slightly humorous manner. Bill Murray used "au contraire" in this sense
to great effect in some of his comedic movies.

A slang phrase which says the same thing but with even more humor is "No way Jose".
And then there is the phrase that Lee Corso (the football analyst) uses when he means "au contraire".
He says,"Not so fast, my friend".
