It really depends on her taste.

If she likes historical fiction she might like L.M. Montgomery. I loved the Anne of Green Gables series growing up. And the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. There are so many great historical fiction writers out there: Shelley Pearsall, Carolyn Meyer, Katherine Paterson, Ann Rinaldi, Mildred Taylor, Christopher Paul Curtis, etc. Strawberry Girl by Lois Lenski is good. Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata, and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Or some of the series like Royal Diaries.

If she likes fantasy I would suggest The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale, Princess Academy by Shannon Hale, Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, also authors like Jane Yolen and Donna Jo Napoli. The Giver by Lois Lowry is good too. And I love Lighning Thief by Rick Riordan.

My recommendation is "Justin Thyme". Like the Harry Potter series and the Dark Materials trilogy, it's aimed at kids but isn't too simplistic, (at least, for those who enjoy the likes of Pullman or Rowling). It's a fantasy adventure - but also a kind of intriguing whodunit with puzzling clues and hidden messages. It includes: the Loch Ness Monster, a teenage billionaire, a mysterious Scottish Laird, a celebrity cryptozoologist, a computer-literate gorilla, a Shakespearean gardener, a gigantic bald woman, and an eight-legged cat! The title character is a boy, but he shares the adventure with his older sister - who was my 9 year-olds favorite character in the whole book. My 12 year-old loved it too ...and, I have to admit, so did I! Best of all, there's nothing too scary or inappropriate for kids, so it's perfect bedtime reading!
Here's a link to it on Amazon

Anything by Lois Lowry! Especially if it is "The Giver" or "Number the Stars." I am now an adult and I still pick these books up every so often. Also, as a middle school English teacher, these books have great themes (bravery, standing up for something, etc) and are also good reads for boys.

I very strongly recommend "The Feelings Book" by Lynda Madison. It's one of the American Girl Library Series Books and written for girls who are pre-teens. It deals with how to handle feelings they might be experiencing. Any of those books would be great. If you are wanting a love story, try "Dear John" by Nicholas Sparks. It deals with love between a soldier and his girlfriend before 9/11 and what happened to them afterwards. If you want more of a general love story/animal love story you can try "The Horse Whisperer" or "Bless the Beast and the Children". You might also question her, her mother, her best friend as to what books she might have on her list.

The "Anne of Green Gables" series is always good, a timeless classic. I read it at that age and still go back to it from time to time. "Little Women" is another good one. Any of the "Nancy Drew" books. "The Chronicles of Narnia" would be great, too.

How about one of the "Ology" books? They are VERY cool and great for all ages. There's "Dragonology," "Egyptology," and "Wizardology." Another super cool book is "Fairyopolis."

Other books I recommend:
"Island of the Blue Dolphins"
"The Little White Horse"
"The Secret Garden"
"The Mermaid Summer"
"Mr. Popper's Penguins"

Although The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch is not challenging to read, I recommend it for a girl this age because this is the age that girls begin to feel self doubts. The heroine in this book is self- assured and takes care of herself.
