My boyfriend of 1.5 years is dealing with a lot of work stress right now; so I've decided to back off and give him some space (not calling, not making him commit to plans) so that he doesn't feel that he's juggling me too. This isn't an attempt at reverse psychology, I just think that if the situation were reversed, I'd need some breathing room too.

Is this the right thing to do or do you think I'm just adding to his stress?

I dont think that would be the good thing(backing off). I know that I like it when my girlfriend is near me when im super stressed. dont make him juggle you but maybe make dinner and bring it to him (one less thing he needs to worry about) dont back to far off cause he may feel that when the heat is on you are out

Men need to go into their cave. Yes they do need space, if for no other reason than to unwind.

So when he gets in of an evening don't hit him with all the days problems. Let him unwind. Have a nice meal together. And then talk about what's important.

Something my ex never understood.

It is correct .... but eventually he should open up to you ... to be under much stress for a long time is not healthy for anybody ...

You may just communicate to him this type of message: " I am here for you when you need me". So when he will need to vent or unwind he will know you are available.

Generally I would suggest if continues to be under such stress he may need to change a job. Such stress will effect his health and your relationship big time in a future.

I think your doing the right thing, but once in awhile call him up and just ask hows he doing. and tell him if there is anything you can do for him to call you. give him all your support. let him know you still love him. so he doesn't think you don't.

well maybe call him (not as much) but just check and see how he's doing. he'd probably appreciate that. it might relieve some of the stress knowing that some one is there for him to talk to and just to be there.

You know him better then anyone else does. let him know you are there for him and back off a little if you think it is wise. sometimes we all need a little private time. He will let you know don't be afraid to talk to him about it.
