I appreciate that this is a help site but why oh why do unqualified people give answers on car maintenance?

Im amazed that people just give random answers to SAFETY CRITICAL questions in the maintnance part of the cars and transportation section, if your not a fully qualified mechanic, why answer as you could be putting the driver, passengers and members of the public at risk

Thank you for all your answers but some people are missing the point as for "take a chill pill" well thats different, the point i am trying to make is that the auto repair industry has a bad reputation for not been totally honest, and people complain about shoddy work and overcharging, if people who have answered me take the time to look at my profile you will find im a fully qualified auto engineer, with over 20 years experiance, i work for mercedes benz as an apprentice trainer and assessor and have cpd (continuing professional developement) to ensure my skills and qualifications are as up to date as the manufacturers technology is. would people in the uk prefer to take their vehicle to a garage where you have a suitably qualified technician or someone who doed not have the training and merely wroks from what "they know" we have rules about gas appliances etc shouldnt it be the same as we are trying to do with vehicles

I for one happen to agree with you. About 95% of the answers given here are, on average, complete rubbish. Of course it doesn't help that many of the questions are so hopelessly vague as to make a good answer nearly impossible. Most do not even bother to include a year/make/model/engine description. If you don't have the basics....

I would also submit however, that most of the people who post it mean well, they just don't know how clueless they really are.

Fully Qualified Mechanic, dont make me laugh its a bit of paper.
In my day we worked on Morris Minors and Side valve fords, which got a city and guilds, now there are ABS Fuel Injection VVT Disc brakes, nobody Is fully Qualified we all learn by experience and many private owners and enthusiasts are far more knowledgeable on specific subjects than professionals.
I certainly hope anyone with any suggestion will answer my next query as even the daftest suggestion may lead to a solution.

People CLAIMING to be QUALIFIED MECHANICS on here could be as ignorant as those who simply recognise the problem and try to pass on some useful information.

The Asker will be able to judge for themself whether the advice is likely to be reliable; the answers provided by idiots usually seem idiotic, and anything else has to be taken very cautiously.

There's a section in here that's full of MEDICAL QUESTIONS. Sometimes, people are posting on it because what their doctor told them was difficult to understand. Medics are highly trained, and can make mistakes, just like mechanics.

Similarly, people can feel that the QUALIFIED MECHANIC who fixed their car sold them a line of bull in order to make some extra money, and want to find out whether there are plausible alternatives to the story they were told.

Just because someone is not a qualified mechanic does not mean they do not know anything about cars!! But I understand what you are saying - if people do not know the answer they should not give advice. But then again you must remember that there are people who answer questions believeing that they are right - maybe because that is the information they have been told by a qualified person in the past! Just because someone is qualified does not always make them right either!!

Because, sometimes you may have had the same problem and know what/where a person can do/go to solve it. I had a question about a problem with my wipers not staying down in the off position. As the answer I got it explained why it was happening and where I should go to solve it. No harm no foul.. Some answers are like advice ... you do with them the way you like.

m8, if you want professional answer go to your local garage and get a qualified mechanic to answer your question.
most of the people on here that give answers are honest and relay there experiance on how they solved a problem such as the one you want help with.
this may not be a qualified as per car makers guidelines. but in some cases yes you get bad advice which could be dangerous, but you need to have your head screwed on to tell which answer sounds right and is worth attempting to follow and which is down right suicidal.
you sound like you have your head half screwed on (i would say screwed on, but if it was on properly you would not be using answer for safety critical answers)

if you want a safety critical answer get a haynes manual for your vehicle.

You have a good point there and that's why being a qualified mechanic and skilled engineer I stay in this section.

It would be wrong for me to try and diagnose health issues when i have no medical training wouldn't it.

But people can make up their own minds on whether to follow the advice or use it as a guide.

Perhaps because the questioner has asked for advice on here and the responders have had the courtesy to give him/her their advice as requested. If the questioner wants "qualified" advice, he/she surely is bright enough to go to a "qualified" person.

As it happens, I agree with you that there are some dubious answers on here. Anyone worth his salt would suggest the questioner goes for professional advice if appropriate, especially as it's very difficult sometimes to give advice without seeing the car. However, the questioner has asked for opinions and got 'em!

If you are concerned about the quality of an answer, Yahoo answers is NOT the place to ask such questions... take it upon your OWN judgement.. this is not 100% accurate.... stop being a cheap azz and take your car in for PROPER maintaining of your vehicle and if you have common sense,,, you will know when to believe someones answers and tips are legit!!
