What is a lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse (this is for school)

A lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes through the shadow of the Earth. In a partial lunar eclipse, the moon through the penumbra, and may pass partially through the umbra. In a total lunar eclipse, the moon in its entirety passes into the umbra.

A solar eclipse happens when the Earth passes through the shadow of the moon.

A Lunar eclipse is when the moon passes through the shadow of the earth. (Earth moves between the sun and the moon.) This causes the moon to appear to "black out" A Solar eclipse is when the moon moves between the earth and sun causing the sun to "black out"

First, take the three celestial bodies you need: the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon.

A lunar eclipse is when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, and therefore the Earth casts a shadow on the Moon when the Sun is shining on the Earth, making the Moon get this dark red-orange appearance, as we see from down here.

A solar eclipse on the other hand, is when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon casts a shadow on the Earth when the Sun shines on it. The result is people looking from Earth see the Sun covered up by a large black disc, which is actually the Moon covering up the Sun.

Solar - from the Latin for "sun"
Eclipse - means to be in shadow

Therefore:
lunar (moon) + eclipse (to be in shadow) = moon is in shadow
Meaning the earth is between the sun and the moon.

solar (sun) + eclipse (to be in shade) = sun is in shadow
Meaning the moon is between the sun and the earth.

* The total or annular eclipse ends when the Moon's shadow finishes its sweep across the Earth's surface.
* The general eclipse ends when the Moon's penumbra finishes its sweep across the Earth's surface.

* Lastly, fourth contact (also called second exterior contact) is the instant when the Moon clears the Earth's umbra completely.
