The proscribed method of truly killing a vampire is to cut off it's head, fill the mouth with holy wafers and bury the head separate from the body in consecrated ground.

Just goes with the territory with vampire movies and shows... each sets it's own ground rules as to what applies and what doesn't. Take the matter of reflection- someone has to decide how that affects electronic recording devices. It can be an inconvienent plot point trying to sell a modern day vampire who can't get a picture taken or show up on film. Same with sleeping during the day... is it a forced "sleep" like hibernation, or can you actually be up and about. Can you have a vamp moving around in the day, esp. with indirect sunlight, and so forth.
Good points from above. The stake was meant to pin the vamp to the ground to prevent them from getting up, and decapitation was the follow through, with burying the parts in separate locations. However, I do buy into the view of the stake stops the blood from pumping, depriving the tissues of the ichor needed to sustain them... and keeping the stake in prevents the heart from regenerating. Take the stake out, vamp is up and running again.
Decap is a solid method, same with fire and sunlight. I think the reason you don't see the "running water" method used too often is that it's not too dramatic, and the average viewing public doesn't know about it, so that would be a hard sell as a viable means ala "we've never heard of that one, that's ridiculous". Think about it... not many know of the compulsion to count (putting grains of sand or salt outside the entrances to your place... vamp must stop and count all the particles, and should be stuck there til sunrise)... try that one in a movie or show and all they'll be saying is "that is SO Sesame Street".

Sunlight, stake through the heart, drinking dead blood, there's a lot to choose from. I love vampire movies/books! I'm actually glad that there are so many different opinions on vampires, though, that way you're not watching the same thing over and over again.

I remember seeing a 70s vampire movie on Tv- possibly w/Christopher Lee or Jack Palance where the vampire died by being half submerged in a moat of moving water; i have read this is a way to kill them somewhere

Sunlight is definitely the surefire way, but a good stake thru the heart will usually work too.

a stake trough the heart and holy water on them and don't forget sunlight and fire. Although when you stab them trough the heart with a atake they die quickly and all that is left is a pile of dust

i think someone should try something a little contemperary and different, like purposefully feeding a vampire garlic-mint ice cream from baskin robbins

i think you should stake them through the heart, cut off their heads, throw holy water on them, and then either burn them or put them in sun light.
