Chondromalacia patella is a vague term. The problem generally occurs when the patella (knee cap) does not glide smothly through the femoral (thigh bone) grove (obviously the distal femur at the knee). This is a common condition but not a serious one. It never requires surgery and it never causes permanent loss of function or disability. The AC ligament also sounds as if it will do OK. Technically a strain is a stretch while sprain implies various degrees of a tear from microscopic to complete. The MRI is able to image things which we were not able to see before unless the person ended up in surgery. Thus it may image things that are not a serious problem. If the MRI is not able to distinguish a 'sprain' for a 'low grade tear' the 'tear' if one is present is quite small. In such cases it is always expected to resolve without surgery or disability. I am not able to offer specific treatment advice without additional information. I hope that this is helpful.

She has a slight swelling on the top of the tibia, either a sprain or a small tear in the ligament in back of the knee. She has a little build up of calcium under the middle of the knee cap. She'll probably heal just fine with rest, ice and elevation of the leg. Good luck! Next time - don't be afraid to ask the doc to translate! You're paying him for this service!
