Does anybody know how long after guinea pigs are neutered they become sterile? My Vet said that with cats and dogs it can take up to 6 weeks, but he wasn't exactly sure about guinea pigs.
I just had my 2 males neutered so I can put them in with my female. We originally got 2 guinea pigs. They were both supposed to be boys, but one turned out to be a girl and we ended up with 5. We decided to keep one of the babies and I found a good home for the other 2, but I don't want that to happen agian, but I wanted to put them all together as soon as I can because now my girl is alone.
Thanks

I thought the same thing - no testicles, no sperm. Thats why I'm confused.

No testicles equal no more production, BUT there are some still left in the rest of the male sex organs(tubes, prostate, seminal vesicles, etc, etc, etc). Testosterone levels will also take a while to lower because it is on the blood and on the entire body.

When men do a vasectomy it is the same thing with the sperm problem.

Neutering is the surgical removal of parts of the reproductive system, rendering an animal sterile and unable to produce offspring. Neutering or 'spaying' a female involves removing the womb and ovaries (an ovariohysterectomy). Neutering or 'castrating' the male involves the removal of the testicles.

Because they remove the organs & not just tie the tubes, the only reason you should keep them separated is during the initial recovery period so that their wounds don't get accidentially ripped open. I am not sure why your vet told you that, but if he has no testicles, he has no sperm. No sperm means no babies!

Hope this helped & good luck!

The males should be sterile immediately after the procedure, but to be sure, give it at least 1 - 2 weeks.
