The changing appearance of gullies on Mars over the last seven years suggests that liquid water flowed recently on the red planet and may still seep out in brief bursts, researchers said Wednesday.
In what is billed as "the squirting gun," new images of known gullies on Mars show evidence of new flows and deposits, pointing to explosive events in which some form of water burst from crater walls and ran down their slopes.
"We've had this story of ancient water on Mars," said researcher Kenneth Edgett, who participated in the Mars gully study, during a press briefing at NASA's Washington, D.C. headquarters. "Today we're talking about liquid water that is present on Mars right now."
Edgett and colleagues used images from NASA's now silentMars Global Surveyor (MGS) to revisit regions earlier this year where gullies, depression-like landforms on the red planet's surface, were found in 2000.
What they found were new, light-colored deposits that do not appear to have formed from landslides, but could be the work of frost, salt deposits or long-sought evidence that water flowed recently on Mars [images]. The research is detailed in this week's issue of the journal Science.
"I think the evidence for liquid water is compelling," said Philip Christensen, a leading Mars researcher at Arizona State University who did not participate in Malin's study. "But I think certain questions still remain...but that's the natural flow of science." ..☺

wow ...I remember reading a while back that it was speculation.
Some researchers claim that the crust of Mars may hold up to three times more water than initially thought, abandoning the idea that Mars is a barren, cold planet. Some were not for the idea water was actually found one Scientist thought it was possible the the "so called water" was actually Clathrate. Haven't heard anything new about it.....will check Nasa site

Just reading about that...if there is liquid water, there could potentially be life. It may only be an organism or something small like that, but life of any kind on another planet is a big deal. It potentially proves we are NOT alone in this universe after all. I have always believed that it was awfully arrogant to believe we were alone in the universe and some people believe humans started out as a simple organism, so.....

They are calling it water for lack of a better word. But liquid would be more appropriate.
The freezing temperatures on Mars does not allow water to run freely on the surface, so there may be another liquid form that may run through the gulleys there.
It certainly bears some more investigation!

That's not quite accurate. They found evidence that water flowed on Mars in the geographically recent past. That conclusion is based on flow patterns in some rock strata they observed. They are not saying there is water flowing there now.

The powers that be have already known about water, life, and artifacts on Mars, but they are only now beginning to release a tiny bit of what they know to the taxpayers who made it all possible. It's just another governmental coverup by faceless bureaucrats who spend OUR MONEY, but find us too stupid to know the TRUTH.

Oh darn, please indulge me, but I feel a huge "I told you so" coming on...
All of this silly "stand by your Son of Man" religious beliefs have stopped the human race from evolving for last century. We have become so self centered, that we take for granted the whole universe revolves around us.
I am not a scientist, nor a scholar, but what a huge waste of time would the heavens be, if it was just something to gaze at. I would personally give God more credit at creating life elsewhere, than to think we were the best, and only thing he could come up with.

Not quite - they found evidence of what looks like the effects of water.
Of course, these effects occured in the last few years, so if it is actually water, that's pretty cool.
I'm still rooting for life --- at least a stray microbe or something.
