Location, Location, Location! That is the number one factor if your business will sky rocket! Choose it carefully and wisely.

Employees! Look for employees who are attending trade shows and advanced training seminars. Keep your eyes open for good workers in shopping malls, restaurants, laundry services, co-ops and health food stores. Look for good personality. Offer them a greater opportunity in a different field of work
Network with your product reps, massage and aesthetics schools, associations, and human resource companies.

Do your research and keep reading daily the spa business is forever changing. Good luck!

now In my area, there is a day spa on every block. All the hair salons have added a treatment room and call themselves spas. If you're going to do it, do it right. I've worked in both salon spas and real spas. The real spas stay busy because the atmosphere is what the clients are looking for when they want to relax.
Be sure to have adequate separation between hair and nail services (noisy) and the massage, facial and spa body rooms.
As far as budget, expenses etc, it really depends on what size spa and how opulent a setting you're creating.
Massage Today magazine ran a series of stories about putting together a spa from the ground up. Contact them for back issues. http://www.massagetoday.com

The easiest way to do this is purchase a spa that is already running. They have gone through the equipment and installation phases, so you have avoided a bunch of costs. This also eliminates some of the risk. If you want help with your books simply go to a software store and get a package of software for small busineses. They really make things easy for owners today.
I am a business broker, and if you are in San Diego I have two spas for sale now. My e-mail is ronaldj73@hotmail.com
