I also am going to Vegas next week till Christmas, I go every year at this time. It's their "dead" season but there's still much to do and still a lot of people there - it's Vegas, it doesn't stop, even if it slows down a bit. In fact, it's better, because there are no lines to wait on!
I checked out Travelnice.com. It seems like an OK site, but when I did a hotel search, I wasn't satisfied with it. It did not list the hotels in price order, and it didn't seem to have ALL the deals that are available. My recommendation for the best site for hotels is http://www.expedia.com . Expedia will bring up the best deals, and will put everything in price order, from lowest to highest or from highest to lowest, whichever you are looking for. Expedia also will give you the average nightly cost if the rates change during your stay, so you know you're getting the best deals. Try it now - go to expedia, plug in your dates, and then re-order them by price.
My recommondation would be any of the cheapest casino/hotels. Don't bother staying somewhere that has no casino, even if you don't like to gamble. Why stay in a plain old motel when you can stay in a casino hotel for the same money? Even if you don't gamble, the casino hotels are the ones with all the action, including music, buffets, shows, dancing, bars, etc.
Also, my other recommendation is that you try out some buffets while you're out there. When you get to Vegas, you will find some free magazines around town (probably right in your hotel lobby or with the concierge or valet) like "Vegas Now" and "Best Read Guide Vegas". These will give you a list of all the best buffets, restaurants, shows, bars, etc. so you can research it there going by their reviews and the prices, and then you can go directly to the one that sounds good to you. I recommend the Palms, the Rio, and the Gold Coast or Orleans for good buffets that don't cost a lot. The Sahara has a very inexpensive buffet, the quality is decent, but not great, but for the money it's good. The Aladdin, Mirage, Bellagio, and Caesar's all have good buffets also but they're a little more expensive, but they will usually have very good food and things like shrimp and crab legs.
In any case, there is so much to do and see in Vegas, go and have a great time! Don't worry too much about the hotel. The cheapest hotels in Vegas that are Casino/Hotels are fine. The cheaper they are, the more plain your room will be, but it will be clean and a good place to sleep and get cleaned up and watch a little TV to relax. You will be spending MOST of your time out of your room, so don't get hung up on paying a lot for a nicer room. Take what's cheap, it will be fine for your purposes. The difference between cheaper rooms and expensive rooms is that the cheaper ones are usually like motel rooms whereas the expensive rooms are fancier and may have a couple extra amenities, like a Desk and chair or a larger bathroom with marble. I would say if you are on a romantic vacation and want to spend time in the room then a more expensive room is worth it - otherwise, you will hardly be there, so go for low cost.
Also, if you have a car, then anywhere you stay is fine - but if you DON'T have a car for while you're there, then you'll want to stay close to other things, so stay either on the strip or downtown. The Rio, Palms, and Gold Coast are just off the strip and a short taxi ride to the strip. The Gold Coast has a free shuttle to the strip, but it stops at the other Coast Hotel properties also, so it will go to the Orleans before it goes to the Strip. On the strip it will take you to the Barbary Coast which is CENTER strip.
For best hotel deals, I'd recommend:
The Orleans
Gold Coast
Barbary Coast
Tropicana
Monte Carlo
Palace Station (if you have a car)
Excalibur
Sahara
Stratosphere
These hotels tend to be the least expensive for their categories.
If you are going to have a car, I also suggest you consider some short trips to any or all of the following: Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, Mt. Charleston, Red Rocks. They are all in the desert and are beautiful to see, and a great change of pace from the strip! To go to any one of these will take no more than 2 or 3 hours, unless you want to stay longer. You can do some of them on the same morning or afternoon.
There is so much to do there that you'll have fun, but take the time to research it in those magazines that you can get free all over the place, and also ask your front desk for suggestions, they're very helpful and knowledgeable!!! Have fun!!! :)
