like Christian Bale...
What's the actual reason? They just don't get the good movies or is it that they can't pick the good ones?

Well, the point IS when I say "a good movie", I mean not a mediocre one, whether it is a stupid Hollywood blockbuster or artistic piece of ****.
So, why some really great actors (I named Bale) don't get parts in great movies? For instance: Bale is, as always, doing a great job in "Reign of fire". A great job! HE IS A GREAT ACTOR. But the movie... Why can't he pick better?! His acting just has no point in that movie.

Christian Bale is considered by critics to be a good actor. It's just that the films which get an actor the big money and attention aren't the kind of films he does (except for Batman Begins.)

Jeff Bridges is a great actor. But he's never had the financial success of a big budget action film (Starman doesn't really qualify, although he's wonderful in it.)

The movie business is a business, and economic considerations usually come before artistic ones. Actors like Bale and Bridges and actresses like Patricia Richardson and Maggie Gyllenhal plan their careers around artistic considerations, so they don't always get the most economic rewards. Still, none of them are starving, and I'll bet they're all enjoying themselves more than actors who play the same characters over and over again because that's what Hollywood will pay them the most for.
