my betta keeps making bubble nests, but it hasn't even come close to a female fish!

Bubble nests mean that your fish is happy, well-cared for an comfortable in his environment. You've done a great job cleaning, feeding and keeping his tank the right temperature.

Congratulations! You are good mom! :)

Keep up the good work!

P.S. - If the bubble nests bother you just turn down the temperature of your tank a degree or two and he will probably resist the urge to build his nest. Sometimes the warm temperature of the tank will make them nest.

So far, he is healthy and happy. That is what they do in the wilds of southeast Asia where the water is around 80 degrees. He is hopeful that a well conditioned female will wander into his area.

Make sure you do 25-30% water changes every week to keep him that way. Bettas should have at least 2 gallons of filtered 78-80 degree water to swim in. A small room temp bowl will shorten his life dramatically. In the wild they live up to 5-6 years, in our "care" they are lucky to make it to 3 years.

Bettas are great, enjoy him! They only fight with other males, so you could add a small friend for him if the temp is right. Not a female tho, they only spend time together when they spawn, then he drives her away and takes care of the eggs and fry (babies).

Betta do that naturally, instinctively, so I wouldn't worry about it!
Mine does it all the time, and as a matter of fact, I wanted to give mine male a female, but the pet store owner told me they would fight!
