Hmmm, if she meant it ugly, I think it shows how little character she has to belittle a gift.
If not, she may be trying to tell everyone that it is the thought not the pricetag that counts.

There are kits to make potholders by weaving loops of material. Any gift homemade is special.

That's a pretty bad gift. I reccomend a Christmas themed mug with a nice packet of coffe or hot chocolate with a candy cane!

Sounds like she watched the Christmas episode of "The Office". That was one of the gifts in thier gift exchange.
