I got married 7/21/2006
My family offered to rent us the guest house real cheap for the first year or two to get together enough money for a property...
The thing is, Living next to my family after our wedding was not # 1 on our list but its smart for financial reasons. when my husband got home today after stepping out to grab lunch; he noticed our cat running outside, before he left the house he made sure to push foward our room door to give him enough time to leave the house without having the cat leave, his friend was with him at the time so he witnessed this. when my hubby came back the cat was outside door was shut.. Some one came inside.. the only person that was at the house was my stepfather which my hubby waved at on his way out. I called my mother after recieving the call from my husband with story and my mother gets offended! she curses me out and hangs up on me! Then calls me back saying she spoke to my stepdad and he said he never went in the house!

Why should I appologize?
asking for a little privacy is not too much to ask I would think...

Apologize to your mother then change the locks - noone will know unless they try to open the door. You can at least put a lock on your bedroom door. This way, you never have to wonder.

Oh boy! You do have a problem. If in fact it was your stepfather; he's never going to admit to it so you have to catch him in the act. Two ways you can do it. You can rent a "Nanny Cam" which is inconspicuous & catch him on tape & a little more exspensive than the second option. The second option is to buy an Intruder alarm which operates on batteries & triggers once the door is opened. The alarm will scare the crap out of whoever it is & only you can turn it off. They were available at Radio Shack a while back & I've also seen them in higher end novelty stores. They're loud! Everyone in the neighbourhood will hear it. It'll only have to happen once & your problem will solve itself. They excuses for why he had to enter should be good too. Amazing what emergencies arise some days. However if you want to catch what he is doing while he's in there the Nanny Cam is the way to go.

I can understand living where you do for the reasons you mentioned however let this be a lesson to you...never, ever live next to parents, siblings or any other family members. For reasons obvious. By the way....the step-father went into the house. Because if your cat can do all of that I'd lock the damn thing in the house and get on the horn with David Letterman pronto.

Obviousily someone is lying here but since nothing real bad happened here best to just let it die. Change the locks if you feel your privacy is being invaded but then giving them a key makes good sense in case of emergency. I just wouldnt leave anything important lying around for anyone to see. So the best thing here would be to hurry and save enough money for you two to move out and into your own place thus saving the family peace. Good luck

Maybe you should change the locks on the doors for the rest of your time there. If your family is not snooping through your home then they shouldn't care. You can give them the new keys when you move out. If they don't want you to do this then maybe you should take the money you have been saving by living there and move.
Good luck.

Why did she curse you out? You were just asking if your step-dad went into your space....why would he going there? Did you notice anything missing? I would probably secretly have my husband change the locks, since you will be living there for a while longer. Poor thing. I know how you feel. If you feel awkward about changing the locks, then find another place to live. Good luck.

That is a bad situation...I could never do it! If I were you guys, I would talk to your mom and stepfather and explain how you enjoy them being so close, but there have to be boundaries. Tell them that you don't want them intruding without your permission, and if it happens again, I would definately change the lock or put another one on! Mom's especially can get touchy about these kinds of things. Make sure she knows you're not trying to push her away or hurt her feelings, but you two newlyweds need your space!!! Good Luck.

Might just be a misunderstanding. Apologize and let it go. People often remember things incorrectly, no one's immune to that. If you're in doubt - install a security camera near the front door, and have it record the goings in and out; you will have your answer.

You can just change the locks, but it might cause more issues with your family.

Unfortunately, saving on money by living there is costing you privacy. They feel they have a right to do what they want because it is their place and they are giving you a reduced rate. You can put up with it for that reason, or move. It's a no win situation!

I guess the only thing you can do is change the locks and tell your mother it's because you think someone else got the key somehow. Don't let them think your stepdad was the one who was in there, he'll never admit it and it will only make things worse.
