Midwives, rather than doctors, provide most of the antenatal care given during pregnancy in this country.

While you are pregnanct, your midwife (or sometimes maybe a doctor) will check your regularly - about once a month until you get close to delivery, then more frequently up until the birth.

Checks usually involve:
- Having your blood pressure taken
- Testing a sample of your urine to check for any problems
- Palpation (feeling with the hands) of your abdomen to check the uterus/baby is growing as expected for your stage of pregnancy, and, later on, to see what position the baby is lying in
- Listening to the baby's heartbeat using a handheld ultrasound device which is held against the skin of your abdomen.

At other times you may be offered blood tests (to check for certain conditions in you and the baby) and ultrasound scans. Like palpation, for a scan you have to show your tummy to the healthcare provider. They then press a transducer (the bit that passes the soundwaves through your body) onto your skin. In some areas you will be rountinely offered 2 scans, in others just one. You may also be weighed and have your height checked.

It is not normal practice in the UK to have an internal (vaginal) examination during pregnancy, but this is necessary during childbirth. It is also not standard practice to examine the breasts unless you report any kind of problem and there is no need to use ultrasound on the breasts at all.

please do not worry days are gone of any invastive prosedures of check ups.
The doctor will take your bllod pressure which is a cuff around your arm this will not hurt just feel tight and over in seconds this is to make sure your blod pressure is ok.
You will be weighed and may have height checked all normal and painless.
You will be asked to lie down and ALL doctor will do is feel your tummy to see if they can feel baby as to how far you have gone and pregnancy is in the right place this will not hurt.
You will be asked about diet/drinking/smoking and health history this is just to make sure you are ok and have everything you need.
You may be put on iron tablets but not always. The doctor will send your details to hospital and you wait for an appointment.
They will do more or less the same with the exception of doing a blood test to check your bloods and a scan which does not hurt and you will get a picture of baby as an added bonus.
Please do not worry nothing you have will be invasive or hurt just a pin prick for blood test.
Good luck

Even if you do a home pregnancy test you will still have to go to the docs for checks, which is usually bloods and urine, nothing too intrusive!! Stay calm they wont do anything you dont want them to!
The only part of pregnancy that becomes intrusive is the labour, but to be honest the best bit of advice you can be givin when in labour is - leave your pride at the hospital dorrs on your way in and pick it up on the way back out!!
Everyone worries about the labour but when you are thre doing it, you really dont worry as you have other things to think about!! you are no different to how many other people feel about pregnancy, i used to be the same, but i have two beautiful children now! try not to worry and enjoy!! good luck x :)

Are you worried about internal examinations? They don't happen ordinarily until the end when you are in labout to establish how far advanced labour is. Other than that the tests you will have to undergo are blood tests, monitoring the baby's heart beat, external examinations to make sure that the baby is growing and your womb is alright, and ultrasound scans. Until you are in labour none of the tests are particularly invasive, unless you have problems throughout your pregnancy. Oh and they check your blood pressure, your urine to make sure there's no protein and your ankles to ensure they aren't too swollen. Hope that helps. Maybe you could talk to your doctor about your fears? They would reassure you that there is nothing to be frightened of.

Calm down! For one, pregnancy is to be enjoyed, not stressed over.

First of all, as with babies, every pregnancy is different, although there are the standard procedures that most expectant mothers will go through.

However, this does depend on the country (I'm in Ireland, but in UK til 2005)

First, have the pregnancy confirmed by a doc!

Then, first trimester 'dating scan'- generally for those unsure of dates.

Then second trimester scan (you get to see more of the baby then) and, fortnightly visits to the prenatal clinic.....

Anyone want to take over? I went through this SIX years ago!

If you want to know if you are pregnant, buy a pregnancy kit. You pee on it in the morning and find out yes or no in a few minutes.

Or the doctors will have you pee in a cup and do the same test and it will cost you more.

Mostly you will only have ultrasounds when you are pregnant. The only time any kind of internal exam will be done is when you are about to give birth! Also most docs and midwives are very sensitive and understanding - they won't make you do anything you are uncomfortable with.

There is no internal examination or anything like that if that's what you are worried about. They will take your blood pressure and blood to test once you are pregnant but that's about as intrusive as it gets.

why would you have your boobs checked by ultrasound?, they are not carrying the baby.
every surgery is different, mine said congrats and booked me in with the midwife , they never touched me or did a test because home tests are accurate enough for them anyway.trust me if its an embarrasment factor you are scared of its nothing to when you are in labour and you have everyones fingers up your muff ,and when you poop while pushing...thats classic!

I don't understand your question. Are you pregnant? What procedure are you talking about?
