There's this guy at my gym who is not content to be there unless he finds something about someone to rag about. There's not a day that goes by when he's there where he's not putting someone down for one thing or another. The thing is,he gives off this vibe of being completely happy-go-lucky but is he trying to cover up some insecurities?

Some insecurities? Someone somewhere made him feel that if he was not perfect then he was worthless. Since he seems happy go lucky then he must have been told that he would never make the grade so he decided not to care (on the outside).
Since, on the inside, not being perfect would mean he was worthless, and trying too hard on the outside would set him up for possible ridicule and therefore acknowlegement of his worthlessness. He makes sure that all others flaws are pointed out and noticed because then his can not be as important. He probably is completely unaware of his own shortcommings because to look at them would be far too painful so he is stuck deep down inside in a position of self loathing.

What comes out of someone's mouth is what's inside of their heart. Negativity comes from a negative person, so if you prefer positive vibes, stay away. Sometimes it's hard to ignore and you get drawn down with them, so it's much easier to just find other friends if his behavior is bothering you.

He may be trying to cover something and while it is good of you to look for the source it still does not change the fact that he is an azzhole.

without a doubt he feels inferior. Inferior feeling people try to make themselves superior by putting others down. Pitiful.

that and that he probably got treated badly as a young child or teenager.

here what to do to help if you wanted to:

1. ask him if u can talk with him
2. tell him that u r not trying to be offensive
3. tell him to not share any information he doesn't want to share
4. ask him about his childhood
5. just kind of agree with him if he starts to share
6. maybe that happened to u... so tell him "hey that happened to me to"
7.then tell him that u will not repeat anything he says to anyone else
