I've got a pc which is a few years old but it does the job. Recently i downloaded a free optimising check program. It advised me to upgrade my processor. I have a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ . I've been to a few sites but it is quite confusing, some offer free "driver dowloads" does this improve my processor ?? If so what one do I download? Sooo many options.

No. You cannot upgrade your processor with software, it is a key piece of hardware. Even then, generally upgrading the processor alone isn't very helpful.

You cant upgrade the processor, you could try upgrading your motherboards CMOS or try overclocking the CPU.
Make sure you have good cooling if you do, overclocking can damge the CPU. go into CMOS set up, usually by pressing del when computer is starting and look for somewhere that lets you change the CPU multiplier or clock speed. increase them slightly, re start computer and see if it works.

i mean upgrading you BIOS, not CMOS

You can update the processor driver, however, that's not what the check program is talking about. They're "informing" you that your processor is old and outdated.

Upgrading your processor means buying a new one.
