who is lying under the feet of dancing lord shiv i.e. Natraj?

i have seen some idols of dancing god SHIV i.e.NATARAJ. Perhaps HE is doing a dance named TANDAVA.i have often wondered who is lying under his feet always?? is he or she alive or dead? what is the story behind particularly this statue of natraj?is there any deep hidden meaning in the lying of that person under nataraj's feet????
