If pregnancy is supposed to be 9 months, wouldn't that be literally 36 weeks? 40 weeks would mean 10 months. so why do doctors want women to wait until around 40 weeks to have the baby?

That is because when a Dr determines a due date it is based on one of two things. When the woman missed her period or the measurments of the baby. The missed period can be right give or take 2 weeks. And the measuring of the baby is compared to averages of babies and then given a week based on the size alone. There is no way of knowing exactly when a baby was concieved. A baby is condidered full term at 38 weeks. Only a small percentage of babies are actually born on thier EDD (estimated due date). That is why they say 40 weeks because the due date is just an estimation that is within 2 weeks of a point in time.

RE: 40 weeks = 10 months, 36 weeks = 9 months? Why is it that they say that pregnancy is 9 months or 40 weeks. But 40 weeks = 10 months. 9 months = 36 weeks. So if you are 2 weeks late does that mean you were pregnant for 10 months and 2 weeks? I have always wondered this but never asked why? WHy don't they say pregnancy is 10 months...

Most months have 4 weeks and 3 days. Some have just 4 weeks that is why it seem like 10 months instead of 9.

my doctor told me the reason for pregnancies being commonly refered to as 9 months long, is because the baby can be born and survive after 36 weeks. by then the lungs are developed & the baby can come at any time and still be ok.

Actually you are pregnant for about 9 1/2 months (38 weeks) The other two weeks are counting from the first day of your last period and you don't get pregnant until 2 weeks after that.

Pregnancy is calculated in lunar months. Every day in the womb, up until 40 weeks, is of great benefit to the baby.

You're pregnant for 10 months or 9 full months. If you are late you go into your 10th month. 37/38-42 weeks is considered a full term pregnancy. Before that you are considered pre-term and after that post-term.

it depends on the day of the week the month started from to determine how many weeks are there in that month. but like the other person said.. months have 30-31 days..
