Mexico is like 30 years behind the U.S.

There are no jobs there so all the Mexicans would come here.

And do you know how many criminals flock to Mexico??

It is illegal for cars to have catalytic converters there!!

That's insane...

If Mexico became the 51st state, all U.S. laws would immediately apply to Mexico. That would lead to a number of things:

- Economic chaos in Mexico as companies scramble to meet labor and environmental standards, likely causing lots of layoffs and factory closures;

- Mexico has serious problems with corruption within the police forces, so federal intervention likely would be necessary to ensure the proper enforcement of federal, state and local laws;

- Over 100 million additional people eligible for welfare, Medicaid, unemployment and Social Security benefits, causing a huge drain on the U.S. budget (~40% of Mexico's population currently lives under the poverty line);

- Serious water quality and utility deficiencies (by American standards) that would need to be rectified;

- Would Mexico be the 51st state, or would Mexico's 31 states (and one federal district) result in 81 total states? (This actually is a serious consideration).

I could go on, but I'll stop there. Long story short, hilarity would ensue. ;)

Mexico is hardly likely to vote to join the union; and until the economy is stable, it's difficult to imagine the union approving their membership. However, I won't say never - stranger things have happened. Many empires have risen and fallen and the geography of countries is constantly changing.

If such an event occured, both parties would need to be in agreement, so I think most issues would be worked out long before the union became official.

The main problem would be that of trying to establish a Taco Bell franchise in the land of the great Taco.
