I'm in high school and i have something to say about what FORD said: he said that it becomes a fashion show on days that they dont have uniforms but if your school didnt have uniforms (like my high school) than maybe it wouldnt be such a problem
its like when a 13 year old gets a chance to drink they are going to over indulge because it seems exciting to them.
plus the high school in my city that does have uniforms is covered with sluts and druggies... and its a cathlic school! girls actually have sex in the girls washroom for drugs and wear their skirts up so you can see their asses, its gross. our school is alot more calmer and we dress in our regular clothes. I'm in grade 12 so i have had a lot of time to observe and give a resonable response
so obviously my verticed is no, and bad (in some cases)

I am not a teacher or anywhere connected with a school. There are advantages to uniforms. I believe that they are instrumental in bringing the kids (junior high and down) to a state of belonging. They can be a source for extended discipline (students must keep them in good shape, clean, etc.).
There are inherrent disadvantages that I think override the advantages. First, it takes away a students individualism in dress and sometimes in behavior. It provides a big headache for the parents of the kids (something else to worry about). Uniforms carry with them a sense of conformism - moreso than just the dress code. While the teaching staff looks on this as an advantage, the student will eventually give up some of his/her character. Diversity is what makes America so great, so I am against school uniforms in general. Military schools where discipline is a big issue probably need them, but not our secular schools.

I think they are a good idea. It takes away that element of decision in the morning when you get dressed so you are more focused and ready quicker. They are generally easy to care for without special washing required. They eliminate elements of division and judgment from others' young, and often cruel, minds. If you don't come from a rich background, you don't need to worry about keeping up with fashions at school which can be very distracting and depressing. It creates a good image for the school and is a reminder to pupils that they are representatives of their school when they are not on school property.
In saying all that I found it frustrating not to be able to express my individuality and felt like I was just another, in a herd of students. Also they can be a hefty expense themselves. On the whole though, I'd say uniforms are better.
I am a chef now, so I have to wear a uniform everyday anyway. It's great not to have to worry about work clothes and there is still heaps of time to express myself with clothes outside of working hours.

I'm a student. I'm against school uniforms because mostly... the whole reason for them is to fix the problem with other students not obeying the dress code. If people get uniforms they are going to wear them how they want to just like normal clothes. Boys will low ride. Girls will roll up their skirts. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. They'll stick with what they like best.

Having been on both the student end and the teacher end of this topic, I can say that I am completely 100% for school uniforms. School uniforms give students a sense of equality. They enable students who are from poor backgrounds to be equal, in a fashion sense to students from wealthy backgrounds. They cut down on the dress code rules, and eliminate the short shirts, short skirts, inappropriate sayings on clothing, gang colors, brand labeling, and other problems that clothing brands have developed over the years. It also cuts back on the jealousy factor that students have over the new pair of shoes, or the new hot this or that shirt from one place or the other. While it does cut back on a student's ability to express individuality, the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

I went to a high school that did uniforms, and I liked it. It made getting dressed a lot simpler, and it took away all the stress of who was wearing what, etc., especially since the students in my class were from different economic backgrounds. I do think that my school took it too far, requiring students to purchase uniforms from one particular store and requiring girls to wear skirts every Monday. When it was cold and windy outside, that was torture! I think picking uniforms that were a little less itchy would have been nice. :) In general, however, I think that it was a positive thing. Teenagers and kids can be too immature to dress appropriately, anyway; seeing guys with their shorts halfway down their legs and girls with their bras hanging out is just gross.

I'm the mom of 3 sons. They were young when school uniforms first started in grade school and middle school. At first they didn't like the idea, they loved to wear their starter jackets, cool t-shirts and shoes. But the school had a kind of 'modeling day', where students could see all the things they could wear. It wasn't just 'one' outfit for the girls, and one for the boys. It was uniform, yes, but there was like a mix and match thing going on, which appealed to the students. Because on any given day, hardly anyone 'looked' exactly the same.
Each day, a girl could choose from the following: one of three skirts, 2 solid colors and 1 patterned -- slacks in the 2 solid colors -- and blouses in the 2 solid colors and 1 patterned.
And the boys could choose from: slacks in the 2 solid colors -- shirts in the 2 solid colors and 1 patterned.
Wearing a school uniform ends any fighting, arguing, kids making fun of others, gang-type affiliation, stealing expensive clothes, wearing something inappropriate and having to go home to change, etc. Another plus for students and teachers is that when students wear uniforms, for some reason they tend to act better in class. They are quieter and do better work. Students studied harder and learned more in class, paid attention better. Not sure how wearing uniforms caused all that to happen, but it sure did! It was as if the students realized school was more important to them, not just a place they had to go to everyday.
Sooooooo... my take on it all is that school uniforms are very good, I'm totally for it! And after awhile, when my sons got used to it, they liked the idea too. When they hit high school, where uniforms weren't required, each one of them said what a huge difference that was, and they all thought it was harder. It was back to 'fitting in' with others, 'being cool', etc. And they all mentioned at some point when they were in high school how much pressure there was just because of not having uniforms. That pressure hit them hard, they weren't used it, and it made studying and doing everything else in high school harder for them. Plus all the fighting and arguing over clothes at school was back, including worrying if anything was going to get stolen. Plus the fact that girls wearing regular clothes was 'distracting' to them, harder to concentrate on their work. ;) And wearing clothes that was questionable as to whether something was appropriate or not. My sons all agreed that high school would have been easier to get thru if everyone wore uniforms like they did in middle school and elem school.

Im currently in School at the moment and i like wearing a uniform. On Non-Uniform days it becomes more of a fashion show and the whole meaning of school gets kinda distracted. Uniform helps reak down class barriers which are all-ready tearing down schools although i feel more customisation should be allowed like jewllery and such although i think this does depend on school.

I am a student and I am against uniforms. Freedom of expression is a big deal in school, and what we wear is a big part of who we are. Most interactions with friends and aquaintances takes place at school, it's a chance to show yourself. Uniforms make everyone look the same, there's no altercation, just uniforms. I am, by no means, saying students should be able to wear whatever they want, but assigning uniforms to everyone is unneccisary. I see no reason for it.
That is just my opinion, but could you do something for me and choose mine as Best Answer, please? Thank you.

in australia.most schools have uniforms.and i think its a great idea..the kids get a few days in the year where they get to wear their regular clothes and my young 8 year old and i have lot of arguing about what is appropriate to wear on these days..right now its hard enough getting kids to focus on school work.the thought of what to wear everyday would be another unneeded stress.they have lots of time during school holidays to show their individualism.and yes i agree that the class barriers are broken down with the uniform.
